yourcompany.ec, yourcompany.com.ec, yourcompany.com: three addresses for the same company, and each one tells the reader something different. Your domain shows up on the website, in every email and on every business card, so choose it for what it signals, not just for what's available.
What each extension signals
| Extension | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
.ec | Local brands that want a short name | Less familiar outside Ecuador |
.com.ec | Established companies in the country; the traditional choice | Longer to type and say |
.com | Exporters and brands with regional plans | Short names are usually taken |
A practical rule: if nearly all your customers are in Ecuador, choose between .ec and .com.ec depending on which is available with your exact name. If you sell abroad, start with .com. And if your direct competitors use one ending, your customers will probably type it out of habit.
What if I register several?
For most companies we recommend registering the main extension and protecting one or two variants. For example, use yourcompany.com.ec as the main domain and also register yourcompany.ec, redirecting it to the main site. That way:
- Nobody else can use your name with another extension.
- Customers who type the wrong ending still reach your site.
- You make it harder for someone to impersonate your brand with fake emails.
What you shouldn't do is split your content across several domains. Pick one main domain and redirect the rest to it; Google sees a single site and your ranking isn't divided.
Tips for choosing the name
- Short and easy to say out loud: if you have to spell it over the phone, it's too complicated.
- No hyphens or numbers, unless they're part of your brand.
- Check social media: ideally the same name is free on the platforms you use.
The most expensive mistake: registering it under someone else's name
It happens more often than you'd think: the domain ends up under a former employee, the relative who built the first website, or an agency that no longer answers. Getting it back can take months. Make sure the domain holder is your company, that you have access to the control panel and that renewal is automatic: an expired domain can leave you without a website and email overnight.
Check it today: look your domain up in a WHOIS search and confirm three things: the holder, the expiry date and who has access to the control panel. If any answer surprises you, it's time to fix it.
Do this today
- Decide which domain is your main one and redirect the variants to it.
- Register at least the .ec or .com.ec variant you don't have yet.
- Confirm the holder, expiry date and control panel access.
- Turn on automatic renewal.
